KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s soccer team (11-3, 3-0 WAC) captured their fourth consecutive win on Sunday, picking up their third shutout win in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play with a 3-0 trouncing of New Mexico State (1-12, 0-3 WAC).
After dominating possession for the opening 15 minutes of the match, UMKC broke through to find the opening score of the contest in from of the home crowd. A pass from Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.) near midfield down the right side to a streaking Rylan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.) set up a great look for the Roos in the 18’ of action.
Childers would receive the pass and make a quick toward the middle of the field to connect with Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) who would fire a missile from just outside the top-right corner of the box to the far post to give the team an early lead on her conference-leading 10th goal of the year. Both Childers’ were credited with assists on the play.
UMKC continued to apply pressure as the first half resumed and found another score at the 32:28 mark to extend their advantage. A nice pass out to the right wing from Ry. Childers hit senior Ryann Burnett (Wichita, Kan.) in stride deep in opponent territory. Burnett slid past the defender and sent in a ball just in front of the NMSU keeper, finding Lexie Howard (Kearney, Mo.) who routinely redirected the pass into the net with a nice header on her sixth score of the season.
The Roos completely dominated the first half of play, outshooting NMSU by a line of 16-2 while also holding sizeable advantages in shots on goal (9-0) and corner kicks (3-0). The team worked into a number of quality scoring chances aside from the two goals, but a solid effort from NMSU keeper Ashley Martin kept the score at 2-0 into halftime.
Second half action was significantly more evenly matched as NMSU came out with a great display of energy in their comeback attempt. Despite the boosted effort, the Roos’ defense continued to shut down nearly every attack that came their way, holding NMSU to eight shots and three shots on goal in picking up their third consecutive shutout to open WAC play.
UMKC put the finishing touches on the victory with a late goal in the 76’ for the final score of the match. A shot from five yards off the foot of Howard was saved by Martin but the rebound was collected by Burnett and quickly sent into the net for her second goal of the season.
Afton Fennewald (Lake Winnebago, Mo.) was given the start in net for the Roos and was largely untested in the contest. She finished the match with three routine saves in picking up her fifth shutout of the season and improving her record to 8-1 between the posts.
“Although there were some areas in our game today that definitely could use improvement, we are still very much excited to come out with a solid win over a quality WAC opponent,” noted head coach Chris Cissell. “Scoring three good goals, playing our entire roster and picking up another shutout to move to 3-0 in conference play is something we are very excited about.”
The Roos will look to add to their winning streak with a pair of conference matchups next weekend. The team will travel for a road match at California Baptist on Friday, Oct. 12 before returning home to host Grand Canyon on Sunday, Oct. 14.
