EDINBURG. Texas – The UMKC men’s soccer team received their third loss of conference play on Friday night, falling to UTRGV with a score of 3-0.
Starting off the game with a bang, UTRGV would strike its first goal in the ninth minute of play after a ricochet occurred off of the Roos defender unit. Later on in the period, the Vaqueros would bring the attack to UMKC once again and nail their second goal in the 27th minute. UMKC would end up having more shots in the half at three but the Vaqueros would make each of the shots taken count, as the Roos would trail 2-0 heading into the second period.
Around the 60 minute mark in the second period, UTRGV forward Kyle Edwards delivered his second goal of the game from the right side of the box, making the score 3-0 for the Vaqueros.
It was a fast paced game for the Roos as the Vaqueros came out of the locker room with energy and maintained their determination through 90 minutes of play.
With a few games into conference play, the offense for UMKC is still searching for that playmaker who can finish possessions and put the ball through the post. Junior goalkeeper Filippo Errico (Verona, Italy) has worked hard all season to help a team who is still trying to find their offensive identity. From the matchup against the Vaqueros, Errico faced eight shots, five corner kicks and saw a UTRGV team who put the ball all over the field on Friday night.
This is the fifth time this season that the Roos have been shut out and the second time in conference play.
Head coach Rick Benben gave his remarks after Friday night’s match against the Vaqueros.
“Injuries caught up with us in tonight’s match”, stated Benben. “We are going to regroup quickly for our next game Sunday.”
Completing the match in Edinburg, Texas, the Roos continue their road trip in the lone star state to compete against Incarnate Ward on Sunday, Oct. 7th. The matchup will begin at 12 p.m. C.T.
