KANSAS CITY. Mo – The UMKC men’s soccer team ended a season high five-game losing streak by defeating the San Jose Spartans 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Early in the first period, junior forward Tim Staerz (Bad Nauheim, Germany) delivered a nice touch pass over two Spartan defenders to senior midfielder Lorant Lettner (Budapest, Hungary), who would strike the ball off the right post and deliver UMKC’s first and only goal of the game.
The team received a spark on defense when junior midfielder Victor Olorunfemi (Osogbo Nigeria) entered the game for redshirt sophomore Mirko Orchi (Civitavecchia, Italy), who got injured in the first five minutes of play. Olorunfemi gave a boost to the defender unit that kept the Spartans in check throughout the game.
Another stellar performance for junior goalkeeper Filippo Errico (Verona, Italy) as he delivered a shutout for the Roos, his first of the season. Errico, who faced four shots on goal on the afternoon, tallied four saves with the shutout on Sunday. A total of six saves have been made the last two games for the All-WAC Preseason Nominee goalkeeper.
A very excited head coach Rick Benben had some nice things to say about his team’s performance today.
“The boys played well and it was really great to get our first conference win”, Benben stated. “Lettner scored an outstanding goal and Errico had a great save on a long range shot. Fantastic team win against a fine San Jose State team.”
Concluding the home stand for this weekend, the Roos will hit the road and travel down to Edinburg, Texas to face UTRGV on Friday, Oct. 5th. The matchup will start at 7 p.m. C.T.
