KANSAS CITY. Mo – The UMKC men’s soccer team fell to Seattle U on Friday night, with a score of 1-0.

It was a very gritty game all throughout for both sides, resulting in six cards in total for tonight’s game against the Redhawks. Playing through the first half, UMKC allowed eight shots on goal, but were able to maintain a 0-0 tie heading into the second period.

As the second period began, Seattle U brought their offensive tactics into gear, scoring a goal in the 49th minute of play. The goal would end up being the lone dagger of the night, resulting in UMKC’s fifth straight loss.

Junior goalkeeper Filippo Errico (Verona, Italy), faced a ferocious attack from the Redhawks all night which included 15 shots and five corner kicks. Errico would tally two saves for the Roos against the Redhawks as well.

The offense for UMKC had its opportunities to tie the game late in the second half. Senior forward Pantelisz Popgeorgiev had a free kick in the 76th minute after a yellow card was given outside the box on Seattle U. Popgeorgiev fired the shot at the upper left hand corner of the goal when Seattle U’s goalkeeper Josh Adachi deflected the ball over the post.

With a minute left in play, a red card was handed out to UMKC, which resulted in the Roos having to play with 10 players for the last drive of the game. Redhawks goalkeeper Josh Adachi prevented another attempt from the Roos and sealed the door for Seattle U.

Head Coach Rick Benben had some final thoughts on tonight’s match against the Redhawks.

“Very proud of all the boys and the effort that was given tonight”, stated Benben. “We played pretty well against an excellent Seattle team.” “Looking forward to getting back at it on Sunday.”

Continuing through conference play, UMKC will next face San Jose State on Sunday, Sept. 30th at Durwood Stadium. The matchup will start at 12 p.m. C.T.
