KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (12-5, 3-0) continued its perfect start to the WAC season when it swept Chicago State (7-12, 1-2), 3-0, on Thursday night at the Swinney Recreation Center.
Melanie Brecka and Tyrecia Lukes paced the UMKC offense with 12 kills apiece, hitting .265 with six blocks and .474 with seven blocks, respectively, while Alex Ratzlaff notched eight kills, hitting .300 and 18 digs.
In the opening set, UMKC built a 15-9 lead midway through the frame after a kill from Lukes and a CSU error, but the Cougars battled back to tie the set at 18-18. The Roos however, would hold on for a 25-23 victory with Alicia Harrington capping the set with a kill.
The Roos stretched the lead to 2-0 with a 25-19 second set win. The score was tied at 12-12 after 24 points, but UMKC then reeled off the next four points. The lead would grow to as many as eight at 23-15, before a kill from Lukes pushed the Roos to the win.
UMKC then closed out the match with a 25-17 win in set three. Ratzlaff put Kansas City up 16-8 and the Roos never looked back, as Harrington again put the capper on the set to seal the win.
For the Roos, Harrington finished with eight kills and nine digs and Brooke Jacobs added five kills, hitting .264, and three blocks. Rhegan Spiegel, meanwhile, paced the Roos with 19 digs and four assists, while setters Alli Schomers and Kynnedy Myers registered 25 assists and nine digs and 14 assists and six digs, respectively.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Saturday when they welcome in WAC newcomer California Baptist for a 1 p.m. CT contest.
