KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s tennis team kicked-off its fall campaign when it took part in the UCA Invitational with four championship match appearances before the event was shortened.
In Flight A, Katie Fries notched a pair of victories to reach the flight’s title match after taking down Gorana Kadijevic from Oral Roberts, 6-2, 6-0, and ULM’s Manjanna, 6-2, 6-0.
In Flight B, Yana Grechkina matched Fries’ performance picking up wins over Central Arkansas’ Yada Vasupongchai, 7-6, 6-4 and ULM’s Teodora Radu, 6-7, 6-1, 10-6 to make it to the championship.
Making her UMKC debut, Riddhi Sharma, dropped her opening match in Flight C to ULM’s Cueto, 6-1, 4-6, 10-7, before rebounding with a consolation match victory over Oral Roberts’ Jovana Antonijevic, 6-3, 7-5.
Grace Ball, meanwhile, beat Fati Khamissi from Missouri State, 6-4, 6-3, but fell to UCA’s Marli Van Heerden, 6-1, 6-1 in Flight D.
Freshman Thea Dassy, fell in her first two matches as a Roo, going down to UCA’s Rada Manataweewat, 6-2, 4-6, 10-1 and Southeast Missouri State’s Sneha Sinha, 6-2, 7-6.
In Flight F, Thanushree Vale, reached the championship match with a 4-6, 7-6, 10-7 win over Missouri State’s Clara Gandara-Gonzalez and a win over SEMO’s Anais Emelie.
In Flight G, Brylin Staats dropped matches to a pair of Missouri State players, falling to Alexia Meyer, 6-1, 2-6, 10-3 and Brooke Smith, 7-6, 6-2.
In doubles play, Grechkina and Dassy knocked-off Arkansas State’s duo, 7-5 and UCA’s pair, 7-6 (4), before falling in the title match to Southeastern Louisiana, 6-0.
From Flight B, Ball and Sharma won their opening match 6-4 over ULM’s duo, before falling to UCA, 6-1.
In Flight C, Staats and Vale beat the pairing from Missouri State, 7-5, while dropping their match with UCA, 6-0.
