KANSAS CITY. Mo – The UMKC men’s soccer team fell to Missouri State on Saturday night to a score of 4-1.
Head coach Rick Benben gave his remarks after tonight’s loss.
“Tough outing for us as we started with a PK but we were unable to sustain our play”, Benben said.
At the start of the first half, senior forward Pandelis Popgeoriev was set up for a penalty kick in the first minute of play after being fouled in the box. Face-to-face with Missouri State goalkeeper Michael Creek, Popgeoriev won the matchup and earned his first goal of the season, putting the Roos up 1-0 early in the game.
The Bears would strike back five minutes later however with a goal from Josh Dolling, who earned his seventh goal of the season. As the match continued through the first half, both teams would clash multiple times on plays, resulting in five yellow cards being distributed in total.
However in the second half, the Roos were unable to keep up with the Bears as Missouri State would tack on two goals to pull away the rest of the game. The Roos offense could not generate the shot opportunities in the second half that they had in the first half.
In regards to the defensive unit, it was a busy night for junior goalkeeper Filippo Errico (Verona, Italy), who faced a total of nine shots from the bears and tallied one save during the evening.
Diving deeper in the second half, UMKC allowed four shots from Missouri State, with half of those rounding out the score for the Bears at four. Benben is hoping to have his team ready with a week off on the schedule.
“Back at work on Monday to prepare for our WAC opener on Saturday against Air Force”, Benben stated.
Following tonight’s game, UMKC will return home to face Air Force on Saturday, Sept. 22nd at 7 p.m. C.T. This will be the first conference game of the season for the Roos.
