KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (8-4) knocked off host Saint Louis, 3-1, in the opening match of the Billiken Invitational at Chaifetz Pavilion on Friday afternoon.

Alicia Harrington led the way for the Roos, notching 18 kills, hitting .421, with 12 digs, for a double-double.

The Roos jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-17 first set win.  With SLU, trailing by just one, UMKC went on a 6-1 run to go up 15-9 after back-to-back kills from Harrington and Melanie Brecka.  The host would get no closer than five the rest of the way as UMKC took control of the match.

Saint Louis evened the match in set two, but UMKC regained control with a 25-20 third set win.  An ace from Harrington and kill from Emma Dyer gave the Roos a 15-6 advantage early, but the Billikens pulled to within three late at 22-19.  Three of the final four points, however, went the Roos way as Kansas City took a 2-1 lead in the match.

UMKC then put the match away with a 25-19 fourth set victory.  UMKC went ahead 14-8 midway through after a kill from Brooke Jacobs.  The lead would stretch to as many as seven after a kill from Alex Ratzlaff, before a kill from setter Kynnedy Myers gave the Roos the win in their opening match of the tournament.

In the match, Tyrecia Lukes finished with nine kills, while Brecka added eight, Jacobs seven and Ratzlaff six.  At the net, Lukes tallied seven blocks, Jacobs nine and Dyer five, while in the back row, Rhegan Spiegel finished with 15 digs and Ratzlaff notched 10.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow when they take on UNLV at 10:30 a.m. CT and Murray State at 5:00 p.m. CT.
