KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s volleyball team came out with their second victory of the Kangaroo Classic, defeating SIUE in three sets 27-25, 25-17 and 25-17.
With a complete sweep on the evening, the Roos’ dominated the Cougars in every aspect of the game. Junior redshirt Tyrecia Lukes (Miami, Fla.) slammed 12 kills for UMKC while only surrendering two errors and compiling a .667% kill percentage on the night. Sophomore outside hitter Alex Ratzlaff (Hillsboro, Kan.) jumped into the action as well, striking eight kills of her own while accumulating a .444 kill percentage.
However, the 48 kills that were smashed on SIUE’s side of the net for the Roos could have not happened without the assists that help set up of the offensive attack that has been a strong suit for UMKC’s winning ways this season. Sophomore setter Alli Schomers (Omaha, Neb.) helped establish the offense for the match against SIUE with 25 assists.
Junior libero Rhegan Spiegal (Savannah, Mo.) did her part to keep possessions alive all game for the Roos, registering eight digs on the night. Senior setter Kynnedy Myers filled up the stat sheet as well, obtaining five digs and 15 assists for UMKC.
After finishing the first two tournaments of the season 2-1 at home and 1-2 in the Omaha Classic, the Roos look to use their home-field advantage as a way complete this weekend’s tournament with no losses.
UMKC finishes up the Kangaroo Classic with home matches against Southeast Missouri State and Providence on Saturday. Both games will be played at 12:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. C.T.
