KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (4-3) picked up a dramatic 3-2 win in the opener of the Kangaroo Classic on Thursday evening against Arkansas State (2-5) at the Swinney Recreation Center.

Tyrecia Lukes and Alicia Harrington led the Kangaroo offensive attack notching 16 (.429) and 15 (.270) kills, respectively.  Lukes, meanwhile, added five blocks, while Harrington finished with two blocks and seven digs.

In the opening set, the Roos jumped out to an early 10-5 lead after back-to-back kills from Emma Dyer and Alex Ratzlaff.  UMKC continued to lead until the midway point when the Red Wolves broke a 16-16 tie with two straight points.  Kansas City closed back to within one at 19-18, but six of the final seven points went to ASU as the visitors went up 1-0 with a 25-19 win.

The Roos, though, battled back to even the match at one set apiece with a 25-17 win in set two.  This time, it was the Roos who fell behind early, trailing 7-3, 10 points in.  A 5-0 run started by a Lukes kill and highlighted by an ace from Kynnedy Myers gave the Roos their first lead at 8-7.  Later in the set, Kansas City used a 4-0 run, including two more kills from Lukes, to stretch the lead to 19-11, while Melanie Brecka ended the set on a kill from Myers.

In the third set, the Roos went ahead for the first time in the match, with a 25-19 victory.  In the set, UMKC used a 9-1 run to go up 18-9.  ASU would get no closer than six the rest of the way as Kansas City went ahead 2-1.

Arkansas State, however, would not go away quietly, as the Red Wolves forced a fifth set with a 25-21 win in set four.

In the final frame, UMKC fell behind early, 4-1, but fought back to take their first lead at 7-6.  The Roos continued their 5-0 rally, pushing the lead to 9-6, but ASU came back to reclaim the lead at 10-9.  The score would remain close, but with the game knotted at 13-13, a kill from Brooke Jacobs and an ace from Ratzlaff gave UMKC the 15-13 win.

For the Roos, Brecka registered eight kills and three blocks and Jacobs chipped in seven kills and four blocks, while Emma Dyer finished with five kills and two blocks.  In the back row, Ratzlaff and Rhegan Spiegel tied for the team-high with 10 digs each.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow when they return to action in the Kangaroo Classic against SIUE at 7 p.m. CT.
