KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (3-3) fell in the Omaha Classic finale in a five-set thriller to UIC at Baxter Arena.
For their efforts in the tournament, the Roos Melanie Brecka and Emma Dyer were each named to the all-tournament team. On the day, Brecka posted 19 kills, hitting .500 with four digs and three kills, while Dyer tallied six blocks and five kills.
UIC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the match, taking the first set 28-26, but UMKC quickly rebounded with a dominant 25-15 win in set two. In the set, UMKC scored the first five points, getting a pair of kills from Dyer in the run, then extended the lead to 10-3. The flames trimmed the advantage to 21-15, but the final four points went to UMKC with Alex Ratzlaff capping the set with a kill.
UIC once again claimed the advantage with a 25-19 third set victory, before the Roos forced a fifth set with a 25-20 win in set four.
In the deciding set, UIC built a 5-1 lead, but the Roos closed to within three late at 12-9 with a Ratzlaff ace. The lead held at three at 13-10, but the final two points went to the Flames as they claimed the match 3-2.
In the game, Alicia Harrington finished with 10 kills and 20 digs, while Alli Schomers also recorded a double-double with 26 assists and 13 digs. In the back row, Rhegan Spiegel added 16 digs and Ratzlaff notched 14 digs, seven kills and four blocks. Tyrecia Lukes, meanwhile, had five kills and eight blocks and Brooke Jacobs tallied seven kills and three blocks.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they host Arkansas State in the opener of the Kangaroo Classic at 7 p.m. CT.
