KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s soccer team (1-2) opened up a two-game home stand on Friday evening, pulling out a tightly contested 2-1 double overtime victory over visiting Oral Roberts (1-2).

The contest got off to a quick start as the Roos were able to hit the scoreboard off an Oral Roberts turnover near midfield in the 6’ of action. A streaking Tim Staerz (Bad Nauheim, Germany) forced his way into the box before sending a brilliant touch pass in front of the net to Antoine Precheur (Paris, France), who redirected the ball to the far post for an early 1-0 advantage. The goal was Precheur’s first of the season while the assist was the first of Staerz’ UMKC career.

Following the early goal, the remainder of the first half was dominated by the Roos, outshooting ORU by a count of 5-1 while continuing to hold possession in the offensive zone for lengthy periods. Despite the solid performance in the opening period, UMKC was unable to generate any further scoring.

The one ORU shot was a significant one however, as goalkeeper Filippo Errico (Verona, Italy) rushed out from the net to collect a through-ball but was unable to retrieve as he collided into a UMKC defender. The result left an open net for Dante Brigida to even up the score at the 37:23 mark, sending the match into half time squared up at 1-1.

Both sides matched each other shot for shot throughout the duration of the second half, with shots even at seven apiece while ORO was unable to capitalize on four corner kicks in the period. The Roos’ defense on corners were tremendous throughout the game as they safely averted all six of the ORU corners in the match.

With the contest knotted up at 1-1 at the end of regulation, the overtime period set the stage for overtime. After a scoreless 10 minutes, UMKC came up with a huge goal from Staerz with just over two minutes left in the second overtime period to seal up their first victory of the 2018 season. The goal gave Staerz three points on the night and marked his first career goal as a Roo.

UMKC is back in action next week with a home match against Drake on Tuesday, Sep. 4 at 7 p.m. CT.
