KANSAS CITY – The UMKC men’s soccer team faced Missouri State University in the 2018 season opener, losing to a score of 3-1.
UMKC struggled to get anything going throughout the night and had some missed opportunities early on in the game that included five missed shots. The opportunities squandered in the second period as the Roos managed only three shots compared to Missouri State, who had nine shots on goal.
Head Coach Rick Benben had some thoughts for the performance on tonight’s game.
“We never could really get anything going and you have to give Missouri State a lot of credit for how the game played out”, Benben stated. “We couldn’t do much with them attacking a third of the field every possession.”
After seeing the score rise to a 2-0 deficit, UMKC had a penalty shot that was blocked but was put back in by senior midfielder Diego Serfaty (Caracas, Venezuela) in the 85’ minute. With little time remaining, Missouri State would strike again in the 86’ minute, putting the game on ice for the Roos.
Junior goalkeeper Filippo Errico (Verona, Italy) did all he could to keep the game from slipping away for UMKC, recording five saves in the match.
“I think Missouri State has a great team and hopefully we can learn from tonight’s opportunities and get one back when we go to their place in September”, Benben added.
The Roos next regular season game will be on the road at SIUE on Tuesday, Aug. 28th at 7 p.m. CT.
