KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s soccer team (2-1) battled through a hard-fought 90 minutes of regulation with Illinois-Chicago on Friday night, taking the flames into overtime and walking away with a 2-0 victory.

The opening 45 minutes of action saw both sides struggle to generate any sustained offense, combining to register seven shots in the half.

Illinois-Chicago hit the scoreboard first late in the second period when Meaghan Smith notched her first goal of the season to put the Flames up 1-0 at the 82:55 mark, giving the Roos limited time to find an equalizer. Senior forward Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) would do just that, coming through with a clutch score in the 88th minute to even up the score and send the match into overtime.

It didn’t take UMKC long to strike once more after the overtime period began as Mothershead once again made her mark. The senior forward lined up a shot from 20 yards out to shake the net in the upper left corner to seal the win on her third goal of the season.

“It was a very emotional game and I’m extremely proud of our team and the character, integrity and resolve that we showed,” commented head coach Chris Cissell. “We gave up a goal late in the match on our first road game and match on grass of this season. We really battled and competed extremely hard and we were able to tie the match with little time left and the ultimately come out in early overtime and win it.”

The Roos are back in action on Sunday, Aug. 26 with a match at Western Illinois to wrap up the two-game road stretch. The match is set for 1 p.m. CT.
