PHOENIX – The UMKC softball team (12-37, 2-13 WAC) was unable to quiet the red-hot bats of Grand Canyon (27-23, 8-6 WAC) in the final Western Athletic Conference game of the season, falling by a final score of 11-3 on Saturday night.
Senior pitcher Lynsey Conner (Peggs, Okla.) made the start in the circle for the Roos and was unable to find a rhythm against the GCU lineup. Conner would allow single runs in the first and second innings before a big four-run third pushed GCU out in front 6-0. Sara Miller (Marietta, Ga.) came in on relief to throw a scoreless fourth inning before allowing three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to end the game.
UMKC missed a great opportunity to take an early advantage in the top of the first, loading the bases on a pair of hits and a GCU error with just one out. A 5-2-3 double play would end the threat to keep the contest scoreless. The Roos would strand two baserunners in the third inning and another in the fourth as they watched GCU slowly pull away.
Trailing 6-0 entering the fifth, UMKC struck for three runs in the frame to cut the deficit in half. Back to back one out singles from Sydney Garcia (Kansas City, Mo.) and Ashlin O'Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) was followed up with a double from Maegan Rollow (Broken Arrow, Okla.). Two errors on the play by GCU allowed two runs to score and put Rollow on third base before Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.) drove in the final run in the frame with a sac fly, her 27th RBI of the season.
The Roos were unable to generate any further offense as GCU stretched out their lead to end the game in sixth inning with an 11-3 final score. O’Brien was a major contributor at the plate in the conference finale, going a perfect 3 for 3 in the contest.
UMKC will close out the 2018 regular season with a three-game home set against South Dakota (15-36, 5-9 Summit) over May 4-5. All three games of the series will be broadcast on the WAC Digital Network free of charge and will have Live Stats available.
