KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A six-run inning for CSU Bakersfield (6-33, 3-9 WAC) proved to be too much to overcome for the UMKC softball team (12-34, 2-10 WAC) as they came up short in their attempt to sweep the three-game set, falling by a final score of 10-6 on Saturday afternoon.
The series finale got off a to a similar start as the Friday doubleheader with the Roos jumping out front early on a two-run home run from Maegan Rollow (Broken Arrow, Okla.) in the bottom of the first. The round-tripper was Rollow’s second of the season and boosted her RBI total to 16.
After a scoreless top of the first by UMKC starter Olivia Fluehr (Loves Park, Ill.), the junior pitcher ran into serious trouble in the second inning. Fluehr allowed six hits to the first seven CSUB hitters in the frame, forcing the Roos to call on Lynsey Conner (Peggs, Okla.) to stop the bleeding. Fluehr’s final line was much different from her complete-game performance in game one of the series, finishing with six runs allowed over 1.1 innings of work.
Conner would allow just one inherited runner to score before getting UMKC out of the frame trailing 6-2. Conner continued her strong performance in the circle over the next three innings, allowing just one unearned run on two hits to keep the Roos within striking distance.
UMKC scratched across a run in the fourth on an RBI groundout from Morgan Byrn (Lawrence, Kan.) but would leave two runners stranded in the inning. CSUB once again struck for a crooked number in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs to take a sizeable 10-3 lead. Two runs on three hits and an error to open the frame knocked Conner out of the game, ending her line with four runs allowed (two earned) on six hits and a strikeout.
Andra O'Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) entered the game with the bases loaded, picking up the final two outs of the frame while allowing just one of the three runners to score on a wild pitch. O’Brien would toss a scoreless top of the seventh as well to close out a strong performance in the circle.
The Roos fought back in the bottom of the sixth, leading off the inning with a hit by pitch and back to back singles to load the bases. A wild pitch would score one run before Sydney Garcia (Kansas City, Mo.) drove in another on an RBI groundout. A CSUB error brought in the third run of the inning, cutting the deficit to 10-6, but the comeback would end there. Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.) led the way offensively in the series finale, picking up a team-best three hits on the day.
UMKC resumes play next weekend with a three-game road series at Grand Canyon over Apr. 27-28. All three games will be broadcast on the WAC Digital Network free of charge.
