KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (10-23, 0-1 WAC) opened up Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play on Friday night with a matchup against New Mexico State (16-14, 1-0 WAC), falling by a 6-0 final count.
Lynsey Conner (Peggs, Okla.) made her 16th start in the circle on the season and was masterful throughout the majority of the night. Through the first six innings of play, Conner allowed just two runs on six hits while striking out a pair of batters, the only blemish coming on a two-RBI double in the third inning of play.
The Roos lineup had no answers to New Mexico State starter Kayla Green, who entered the contest with a 9-8 record and an era of 3.58. Green limited UMKC to just three hits and four baserunners in six strong innings of work.
UMKC’s best chance to crack the scoreboard in the second inning, getting a pair of runners on with a Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.) single and a hit by pitch to catcher Alyx Bloom (Clay Center, Kan.) but were unable to come up with a big two-out hit. New Mexico State would add four runs in the top of the seventh to seal up a 6-0 win in the conference opener.
The team will wrap up its series with New Mexico State tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. CT. The games will be part of the grand opening festivities at Urban Youth Academy, the new home facility of UMKC softball.
