UMKC Notches Second Straight WAC Win over Redhawks

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s tennis team (7-8, 2-0) notched its second victory of the weekend when it beat Seattle U (7-11, 0-2), 5-2 on Friday afternoon at the Plaza Tennis Center in WAC play.

In doubles play the Roos quickly built a 1-0 lead with a sweep of all three matches.  At No. 1, No. 76 Airam Castellano and Alex Pozo beat Matt Alderson and Colton Weeldreyer, 6-0 and Tom Kruse and Diego Giraldo followed with a 6-3 win at No. 2 over Trenton Nield and Michael Schoettler.  Anil Patel and Hunter Clark then completed the sweep with a 7-5 win over Arshak Ghazaryan and Emilio Monroy at No. 3.

Castellano made the Roos lead 2-0 when he defeated Nield, 6-3, 6-0, while Kruse’s 6-3, 6-0 win over Weeldreyer at No. 3 made it 3-0.

Clark’s 6-4, 6-3 win over Jeremiah Kalmus at No. 5, meanwhile, clinched the match for UMKC and Diego Giraldo added the final point for the Roos with his 7-6, 6-1 win over Monroy at No. 4.

From the No. 6 line, Daniel Izadifar fell to Alex Chan, 7-5, 6-2 and at No. 2, Pozo dropped his match with Ghazaryan, 6-7, 7-5, 10-8.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow when they take on Grand Canyon at 10 a.m. Ct on the Plaza.
