KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s tennis team (10-9, 2-1) registered its second straight victory on the weekend when it beat Chicago State (4-16, 0-1), 6-1, at the Orville Cox Tennis Center in Edinburg, Texas.
In doubles action, the Roos would sweep the trio of matches with Melinda Johnson and Yana Grechkina knocking-off Katarina Drazic and Mariya Kostyuk, 6-2, from No. 1 and Aliona Ladutska and Grace Ball beating Lorea Gamboa and Leshia Gadacz, 6-2, at No. 2. Ioanna Lathouri and Katie Fries then completed the sweep when they beat Alana Andrews and Anastasii Goncharova, 6-2, at No. 3.
In singles action, Johnson made it a 2-0 match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Gamboa at No. 3 and Ladutska pushed the margin to 3-0 after a 6-3, 6-0 win over Kostyuk from the top line.
Fries then picked-up the match clinching point when she beat Goncharova, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2.
Thanushree Vale gave the Roos their fifth point with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Drazic at No. 5 and Grechkina rounded out the scoring for UMKC with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Gadacz at No. 4.
Ball, meanwhile, was the only Roo to fall as she went down to Andrews at No. 6, 6-2, 1-6, 11-9, after dropping the tiebreaker.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Apr. 7-8 when they head to Seattle, Wash., to take on Grand Canyon and New Mexico State.
