KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s tennis team (5-8) dropped a 4-0 match on Saturday afternoon to No. 16 Oklahoma (13-2) at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Okla.
The Sooners built an early 1-0 lead in the match after claiming the doubles point. From the top line, the Roos No. 76 team of Airam Castellano and Alex Pozo lost to Oklahoma’s No. 68 pairing of Ferran Calvo and Adrian Oetzbach, 6-2.
At No. 2, meanwhile, Tom Kruse and Diego Giraldo fell to Jake van Emburgh and Stefano Tsorotiotis, 6-2, while Hunter Clark and Anil Patel were trailing James Davis and Max Stewart, 5-2, at No. 3 when the point was decided.
In singles play, Patel fell to Mason Bridegan, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6 and at No. 3, Kruse lost to No. 106 van Emburgh, 6-3, 6-3.
Oklahoma then clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 when Clark fell to Tsorotiotis.
When the match was decided, however, the Roos were leading a pair of matches as Castellano was up 7-6 (7-2), 2-2 over Adrian Oetzbach and Giraldo was up on 7-6 (8-6), 2-1 over Stewart.
At. No. 2, Pozo was trailing No. 62 Ferran Calvo, 6-2, 5-5 at the end of the match.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they host the first WAC cluster at the Plaza Tennis Center, starting with a 1:30 p.m. CT match with Chicago State on Mar. 29.
