KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s tennis team (8-9) fell in the opening match of their WAC cluster, 4-3, to UT Rio Grande Valley (8-8) at the Orville Cox Tennis Center in Edinburg, Texas.

The Vaqueros built an early 1-0 lead, claiming all three doubles point.  At No. 3, Katie Fries and Ioanna Lathouri went down to Lasya Patnaik and Anastasia Belyaeva, 6-2 and at No. 2, Aliona Ladutska and Grace Ball lost to Dominique Esparza and Doris Aleksovska, 6-2.  At No. 1, meanwhile, Melinda Johnson and Yana Grechkina went down, 6-4, to Marine Darzyan and Dominique Ibarra.

UTRGV pushed the lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 4 by Belyaeva over Grechkina and 3-0 after Johnson fell to Ibarra at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1.

The Vaqueros then clinched the match when Thanushree Vale lost, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 to Aleksovska.

UMKC, however, claimed three points in the match with victories at Nos. 1, 2 and 6.

From the top line, Ladutska took down Esparza, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) and at No. 2, Fries beat Darzyan, 7-5, 3-2, ret.

Ball notched the Roos final point with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win at No. 6 over Patnaik.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow when they face Seattle U at 4 p.m. in Edinburg.
