KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s tennis team (4-7) picked up a 7-0 win on Friday afternoon at the Plaza Tennis Center over Northwest Missouri State (1-5).
The No. 78 ranked doubles team of Airam Castellano and Alex Pozo got the Roos started with a 6-2 win at No. 1 over Youssef Sherif and Jorge Serrano, but the Bearcats evened the doubles matches at one match apiece as Anil Patel and Hunter Clark fell to Bjorn Kurtze and Agustin Velasco, 6-4 at No. 3. UMKC, however, claimed the point when Tom Kruse and Diego Giraldo took down Josef Almann and Rahul Manoah, 7-5 at No. 2.
Kruse made it 2-0 in favor of the Roos with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Velasco at No. 3 and Castellano extended it to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Altmann. The clincher, meanwhile, came via a 7-5, 6-3 win from Patel at No. 6 over Kurtze.
Pozo pushed the lead to 5-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Manoah at No. 2, with the final two points coming from Giraldo at No. 4 over Sherif, 7-5, 6-3 and from Clark at No. 5, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 over Serrano.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they take on Omaha at 7 p.m. CT in Omaha, Neb.
