Roos Close Regular Season With 96-82 Loss at Chicago State

CHICAGO, Ill. – The UMKC men’s basketball team (10-21, 5-9 WAC) closed out their 2017-18 regular season with a 96-82 loss on the road at Chicago State Saturday night.

First half action saw both sides trade shots back and forth as the opening 20 minutes transpired held four ties and five lead changes. Xavier Bishop (Springfield, Ill.) was a major factor for the Roos in the first half, dropping in 14 points in the opening frame to lead the team. Bishop finished the game with 17 points and a game-high five assists.

Following a pair of Chicago State made free throws at the 7:14 mark of the first half for a 34-27 lead, UMKC quickly responded with a 9-2 run to tie up the contest late in the first half. The run was highlighted by six points from freshman Brandon McKissic (Ferguson, Mo.) that helped erase the early deficit. McKissic put together a monster performance in the effort, finishing with 22 points along with three rebounds and two assists.

Entering the second half with UMKC tailing closely 47-45, Chicago State scored the first eight points of the second half to claim their first double-digit advantage of the contest. A 10-3 Roos run ensued, capped off by an Isaiah Ross (Davenport, Iowa) three-pointer, brought the Roos back within one possession at the 14:37 mark as the team looked to make a run to jump back in front. Ross ended the game with a game-high 24 points, including four makes from beyond the arc, to pair with a team-high nine rebounds and two assists.

UMKC continued to battle throughout the second half in their attempts to climb back on top but was unable to find the breakthrough bucket to seize the momentum. The team would climb within five points at the 8:02, 6:43 and the 3:01 marks of the second half but were unable to close out the deficit, falling by a final score of 96-82.

UMKC will be back in action in the first round of the WAC Tournament that is set to begin Wednesday, Mar. 7.
