MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The UMKC softball team (3-7) was unable to take down Massachusetts (5-4) on the final day of the Madeira Beach Invitational, falling by a final score of 10-2 in six innings.
Senior pitcher Lynsey Conner (Peggs, Okla.) made her third start of the tournament in the circle but had a difficult time slowing down the UMass offense after a pair of successful starts Friday and Saturday. Conner grinded through 3.2 innings, surrendering seven runs on eight hits in the loss.
Sara Miller (Marietta, Ga.) did not have any better luck on the rubber, coming on to pitch 1.1 innings in relief of Conner, allowing two runs in the appearance. UMass starter Quinn Breidenbach was a handful for the Roos, allowing two runs on three hits over six strong innings of work.
The UMKC bats began to heat up in the top of the fifth inning, striking for a pair of runs in the frame. Olivia Fluehr (Loves Park, Ill.) got the scoring started with a solo home run to lead off the inning, her second of the season. Later in the fifth, Sydney Garcia (Kansas City, Mo.) came around to score on a stolen base and throwing error to trim the deficit to 7-2.
No further damage would be done by the Roos as UMass put up three runs in the bottom of sixth to end the game with a 10-2 run rule final score.
UMKC is back in action next weekend as they compete in the Red and Blue Classic in Oxford, Miss., from Feb. 23-25. Contests against SIU Edwardsville, Stephen F. Austin, North Dakota State and Ole Miss await the Roos in the event.
