MERIAM, Kan. – The UMKC women’s tennis team (4-4) came up just short in its match against the United States Air Force Academy (5-1), falling 4-3 to the Falcons on Sunday afternoon at the Kansas City Racquet Club.

The Falcons took an early lead in the match, claiming the doubles point, despite a 6-2 victory from Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) and Ioanna Lathouri at the No. 3 spot over Meredith Laskey and Carley Hatcliff. 

At No. 1, Melinda Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) and Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia) fell to TJ Fumagalli and Elizabeth Barnickel, 6-4 and at No. 2, Aliona Ladutska (Minsk, Belarus) and Grace Ball (Wichita, Kan.) lost to Meredith Jones and Ashleigh Harvey, 6-3.

In singles play, Johnson and Grechkina each picked up straight set victories, with Johnson downing Laskey, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 and Grechkina knocking off Jones, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4.

For the Falcons, Barnickel defeated Fries 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 and Harvey beat Thanushree Vale, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5, giving them a 3-2 advantage with two matches to be decided.

Ball then knotted the score at 3-3 for the Roos, coming back to earn a 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 6 over Hatcliff, leaving the deciding match at No. 1.

At No. 1, Ladutska went ahead in the match taking the first set 6-1 over Fumagalli, but the Falcons top player claimed the last two sets, 6-3, 6-1 to seal the match for Air Force.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Saturday when they host South Dakota at 10 a.m. CT.
