BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The road has not been friendly for the UMKC men’s basketball team (6-19, 1-7 WAC), as the Roos were unable to overcome the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (10-13, 3-5 WAC) at the Icardo Center Saturday night.
In his first start in three games, Isaiah Ross (Davenport, Iowa) was on fire from the start, connecting on three-straight treys to account for nine of UMKC’s 11 points going into the first media break. The ‘Runners responded with a 6-0 run and held the Roos without a point for nearly three minutes.
A layup by Jordan Giles (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) off of a pass from Robert Knar (Mundelein, Ill.) ended UMKC’s scoring drought and helped the Roos regain the lead. Five quick points by CSU Bakersfield gave the ‘Runners their largest lead – four points – at the 11-minute mark of the first half.
Approaching the midway point of the half, the ‘Runners went on a 16-0 run to hold the 28-13 advantage over the Roos. Newcomer Brandon McKissic (Ferguson, Mo.) went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to help UMKC restart its offense.
Xavier Bishop (Springfield, Ill.) continued to push at the CSU Bakersfield defense, stepping up to the charity stripe and knocking in a pair to help the Roos chip away at the ‘Runners lead.
CSU Bakersfield continued to run up the score, taking a 24-point lead over the Roos heading into the locker room. Ross led UMKC with nine points, while Broderick Robinson (Grand Junction, Colo.) took charge on the boards with a team-high three rebounds.
A 3-point play by Bishop, as well as four early first-half points by Ross, helped UMKC cut into the ‘Runners lead to open the second half. On a fast break, Robinson sprinted up the court and laid it in to bring the Roos within 12 points.
Bishop found McKissic behind the 3-point arc at the midway point of the second half, who buried his first trey of the night to help end a six-minute scoring drought by UMKC. Bishop continued to make an impact for the Roos, as the sophomore would finish with a team-high 17 points and five assists. Tonight’s game marked the sixth time in seven outings that the sophomore has hit double-figure scoring.
With less than a minute to play, Robinson drained back-to-back 3-pointers for 12 points in the game, but the Roos fell to the ‘Runners, 81-58.
UMKC will close out the 2018 home slate with a trio of Western Athletic Conference matchups, beginning with Seattle U next week.
