KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s tennis team (2-1) went to Jonesboro, Ark, on Saturday morning and picked-up a 4-0 win over host Arkansas State (0-5).
The Roos got off to a 1-0 start in the match, claiming a hard-fought doubles point, two matches to one. The Red Wolves struck first, taking the match at No. 2, as Aliona Ladutska (Minsk, Belarus) and Grace Ball (Wichita, Kan.) fell 6-3 to Shelby King and Shannon O’Brien.
UMKC, however, claimed the matches at No. 1 and No. 3, with both matches going to a tiebreak. At No. 1, Melinda Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) and Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia) defeated Anita Detlava and Berta Masdevall Masip, 7-6 (3), while at No. 3, Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) and Thanushree Vale (Chennai, India) won by an identical 7-6 (3) score over Kirsty Venter and Sabina Jeresic.
In singles action, the Roos quickly wrapped up the match as Ladutska won at No. 1 over King, 6-1, 6-1 and Fries matched her at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Detlava.
UMKC then clinched the match when Johnson won her match at No. 3, 7-5, 6-3 over Jeresic.
In the Roos remaining matches, Grechkina dropped the first set at No. 4, 4-6 to Masdevall Masip, but was leading 3-1 in set two and Vale was trailing O’Brien,6-2, 1-0 at No. 5. The No. 6 match between Ball and Venter, meanwhile, was not started.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow in Jonesboro, Ark., for a 9 a.m. match against Central Arkansas.
