Merriam, Kan. – The UMKC women’s tennis team (1-1) picked up its first win of the season on Sunday morning when it took down Omaha (1-1) 5-2 at the Kansas City Racquet Club.
Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) led the Roos in the match as the junior picked up a pair of wins on the day. In singles action, she defeated Michelle Lo 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1, while teaming with Thanushree Vale (Chennai, India) at No. 3 doubles to beat Emily Behling and Rylee Tucker 6-1. Vale, meanwhile, dropped her singles match at No. 4 to Natalie Lorentz 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 in one of the match’s three, three-set contests.
Grace Ball (Wichita, Kan.) also nabbed a pair of victories in the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over Behling and a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Savanna Crowell and Janelle Wilson with partner Ioanna Lathouri. Lathouri was the third Roo to come away with two wins as she defeated Tucker 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
The Roos fifth point of the match came from the No. 3 singles spot where Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia) beat Crowell 7-5, 6-7 (4), 10-7. In doubles play, Grechkina and partner Melinda Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) fell to Lo and Lorentz at No. 1, 6-3, while Johnson also dropped her singles contest with Wilson in a tight 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 2.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Saturday when they head to Jonesboro, Ark., for a 3 p.m. match against Central Arkansas.
