WACO, Texas. – The UMKC men’s tennis No. 1 doubles pairing picked up a monumental victory on Saturday when Airam Castellano (Gran Canaria, Spain) and Alex Pozo (St. Louis, Mo.) took down No. 11 Baylor’s No. 2 ranked doubles team of No. 11 Johannes Schretter and Will Little 6-3 at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
In his singles matches, Castellano opened with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to No. 68 Boerjn Petersen before a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Schretter in the afternoon. Pozo, meanwhile, fell 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 to Schretter in the latter match after dropping a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Sven Lah in the opener. In the late doubles contest, the partners fell 6-4 to Jimmy Bendeck and Matias Soto.
Tom Kruse (Flensburg, Germany) dropped his No. 3 match with Soto 6-3, 6-3 and teamed with Diego Giraldo in a 6-3 loss at No. 2 doubles in the late match and 6-1 defeat in the early match. Giraldo, meanwhile, lost at No. 5 to Roy Smith 6-2, 6-3 and at No. 3 to Soto 7-5, 6-3.
From the No. 3 position, Kruse fell to Arthur Dubinksi 7-5, 6-0 and at No. 5 Giraldo went down 6-2, 6-1 to Mendoza. Clark, meanwhile, rounded out the lineup with a 6-0, 6-2 loss at No. 6 to Hammond.
At No. 3 doubles, Izadifar and Clark lost 6-4 in both in the late match 6-4 and in the early contest.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Friday when they host William Jewell at 2 p.m. in the home opener.
