STILLWATER, Okla. – Alex Pozo (St. Louis, Mo.) picked up the lone win for the UMKC men’s tennis (0-1) team in the opening match of the season, a rematch of last season’s NCAA first round contest, against No. 15 Oklahoma State (3-0) as the senior took down the Cowboys Tristan Meraut 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 in the Greenwood Tennis Center.
In his double match, Pozo teamed with Airam Castellano (Gran Canaria, Spain) at No. 1 where they fell to Julian Cash and Luke Hammond, 6-3, while at No. 3 Daniel Izadifar (Tonsberg, Norway) and Hunter Clark (Overland Park, Kan.) dropped their contest with Jurence Mendoza and Brady Draheim 6-2. At No. 2, Diego Giraldo and Tom Kruse (Flensburg, Germany) where trailing 5-3 when the point was decided.
In singles action, Izadifar put up a fight against No. 93 Mathieu Scaglia, falling 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 and at No. 1, Castellano lost to Cash, 7-5, 6-2.
From the No. 3 position, Kruse fell to Arthur Dubinksi 7-5, 6-0 and at No. 5 Giraldo went down 6-2, 6-1 to Mendoza. Clark, meanwhile, rounded out the lineup with a 6-0, 6-2 loss at No. 6 to Hammond.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Saturday when they head to Waco, Texas for a doubleheader against Baylor with the matches starting at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. CT.
