MERRIAM, Kan. – UMKC women’s tennis (0-1) dropped its season opener to Kansas State (1-0) in a 7-0 decision on Thursday afternoon at the Kansas City Racquet Club.
In doubles play, the Roos’ No. 1 combo of Aliona Ladutska (Minsk, Belarus) and Grace Ball (Wichita, Kan.) fell 6-2 to Margot Decker and Carolina Costamagna, while at No. 2 Melinda Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) and Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia) dropped their contest with Ines Mesquita and Maria Linares 6-4 to give K-State the doubles point. At No. 3, meanwhile, Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) and Thanushree Vale (Chennai, India) were trailing 5-3 when the point was decided.
K-State then went up 3-0 in the match when Johnson dropped her contest with Rosanna Maffei 6-0, 6-0 and Ladutska fell 6-0, 6-1 to Decker.
At No. 4, Grechkina battled the Wildcats’ Linares, but ultimately fell 6-3, 6-2 to give K-State the match.
From the No. 2 position, Fries went down a set to Costamagna with a 6-2 first set loss, but continued to fight as she was tied late at 4-4 in set two before ultimately falling 6-4.
Vale and Ball, meanwhile, also battled with the Wildcats with Vale falling to Mesquita 6-4, 6-3 and Ball dropping her match with Carolina Lewis 6-3, 7-5.
In a non-point match, Ioanna Lathouri fell 6-4 to Meghan King.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Sunday when they welcome in Omaha for a 9:30 a.m. CT match at the KC Racquet Club.
