Eight Roo Returners Post Personal Bests in Season Opener

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The UMKC men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the 2017-18 indoor campaign on Saturday at the Bob Timmons Classic. Eight returning UMKC student-athletes posted personal best performances in their respective individual events.

On the track for the women, Chesney Walker (Scottsbluff, Neb.) notched two personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles and 400-meter dash with times of 9.26 seconds and 1:01.31, respectively. Genel Rollins (St. Louis, Mo.) opened her senior season with a personal best time of 1:00.13 in the 400-meter dash to finish in the top-10 in the event.

In the field, Matia Finley (Lawrence, Kan.) finished fifth in a field of 29 student-athletes with a mark of 14.62 meters in the weight throw. Sophomore Shermane Foster (St. Louis, Mo.) leapt a personal best 11.15 meters in the triple jump to lead the way for the Roos, finishing seventh overall in the event. WOMEN’S SHOT PUT

Multi events specialist Daiwa Emmert (Bolivar, Mo.) cleared a personal best 1.60 meters in the high jump to finish third as UMKC’s lone competitor in the event.

On the men’s side, Christopher Bryan (St. Catherine, Jamaica) kicked off his junior campaign with an impressive showing in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing second with a personal best time of 8.21 seconds to make his way into UMKC’s top-five performance list. Finishing right behind Bryan was Fred Boyd (Detroit, Mich.), who clocked in a time of 8.29 seconds in the event.

Junior Traezon Henderson (Gardner, Kan.) clocked in a personal best time of 7.01 seconds in the 60-meter dash, while Chadayne Walker (Portmore, Jamaica) finished 10th in the event with a time of 6.95 seconds.

Senior Jacob Hockman (Centralia, Mo.) and newcomer Perry Adderley (Nassau, Bahamas) put on a show in the field, as the pair finished second and fourth, respectively, with heaves of 15.46 meters and 14.58 meters, respectively, in the shot put. Returner Zane Lockhart (Plattsmouth, Neb.) improved his shot put mark as well, throwing 10.31 meters. In the weight throw, Hockman threw a personal best 15.80 meters to finish fourth, while Adderley finished ninth with a mark of 13.71 meters.

In the long jump, Bryan matched his personal best with a leap of 7.14 meters to finish in the top three in his second event of the day.

Senior standout Bryce Miller (Ashland, Wis.) will kick off his season at the Hoosier Open in Bloomington, Ind., on Dec. 8 to close out 2017 for UMKC.
