KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s basketball team (1-3) wrapped up its intense week of playing four games over the course of seven days, hosting the Loyola Ramblers (3-0) at Municipal Auditorium on Thursday night. Despite a career night by senior guard Broderick Robinson (Grand Junction, Colo.), the Roos fell to the Ramblers, 66-56.
Robinson opened up scoring for the Roos, knocking down a jumper a minute into the game, while Jordan Giles (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) drained his second 3-pointer of the season, and just fifth of his career, allowing the Roos to hold a 5-2 lead going into the first media timeout.
Loyola went on an 8-0 run before a 3-pointer from Marco Smith (Kansas City, Kan.) started a small run for the Roos. Robinson drilled another three for UMKC at the 7:10 mark to help UMKC regain the lead. The Roos closed the first half on a 14-3 run in the final six minutes, as baskets by Robinson, Giles, Xavier Bishop (Springfield, Ill.) and Isaiah Ross (Davenport, Iowa) helped UMKC to a 26-20 lead at the half.
The Ramblers opened the second half on an 11-3 run, but another 3-point basket from Broderick broke UMKC’s scoring drought. Back-to-back three’s from Ross pushed the Roos out in front, 41-37.
Another run by Loyola helped them to a 12-point lead, but UMKC wouldn’t stop pushing the basketball at the Rambler defense. A pair of free throws by Giles brought the Roos back within single digits, before Loyola escaped with the 66-56 victory.
Robinson led the way for the Roos, notching a career high in points (16), field goal attempts (11) and 3-point attempts (7). He also matched his career-highs in rebounds (7), steals (4), field goals (5) and 3-pointers (3) while falling just a minute shy of a career high in minutes played.
Ross and Giles also reached double digits in the points column with 11 and 12 points, respectively. Freshman Brandon McKissic (Ferguson, Mo.) led the way with three assists, while Aleer Leek (Juba, South Sudan) blocked three shots.
UMKC will travel to Estero, Fla., next week and play three games in three days as a part of the Gulf Coast Showcase. The Roos opening round game will be against Manhattan on Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. CT.
