OREM, Utah – The UMKC volleyball team (9-17, 5-8) fell 3-0 on Thursday night in Western Athletic Conference play at Utah Valley (13-15, 8-5) inside the PE Building in Orem, Utah.
Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) led the Roos with 12 kills, hitting .233, with 15 digs and two blocks for a double-double, while Brook Jacobs (Peoria, Ill.) added 11 kills and four blocks. In the back row, Rhegan Spiegel (Savannah, Mo.) topped the team with 18 digs.
In the opening set, the Roos fell behind early, but battled back to take the lead at 16-14 after a UVU error and a kill from Jacobs. The lead, though, was short-lived as the Wolverines reclaimed the advantage at 18-17 before going up 1-0 in the match with a 25-20 first set victory.
In set two, it was the Roos turn to build an early lead, as UMKC went ahead 9-4 after another Jacobs kills, an ace from Spiegel and a UVU error. UMKC then stretched its lead to as many as six at 12-6 after a kill from Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) and another Utah Valley error. The Roos would keep the edge until late in the set when the Wolverines went ahead 19-18, but kills from Sadler and Kynnedy Myers (Rose Hill, Kan.) put the Kangaroos back in front. Utah Valley, however, scored six of the final nine points to take the set 25-23 and a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
In the third and final set, the Roos built a lead for a third straight set, this time going ahead 7-2, nine points in after an ace from senior Mikayla Martinez (Frederick, Colo.). UMKC would maintain the lead until 16-15 when the Wolverines went in front for the first time in the set at 21-16 with a 7-0 run. UMKC closed back to within three at 21-18 on a kill from Jacobs and a UVU error, but could get no closer as Utah Valley won the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
For the Roos, Sadler finished with eight kills, hitting .333, with four blocks and three digs, while setting up the offense, Alli Schomers (Omaha, Neb,) tallied 21 assists and three digs and Myers added 14 assists and three digs. At the net, Alexia Morey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished with three blocks, while Alex Ratzlaff (Hillsboro, Kan.) notched four kills and five digs.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Saturday when they head to Seattle, Wash., to take on Seattle U at 3:00 p.m. CT on Nov. 11 to close out the regular season.
