KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC women’s basketball team claimed a 75-64 victory in their lone exhibition contest of the 2017-18 season. It was an excellent first showing for first year head coach Jacie Hoyt as the Roos pulled away in the second half to take control of the game.
The first half of play was highly contested between both sides, including four ties and seven lead changes. UMKC was able to claim a nine-point lead in the first quarter but William Jewell was able to close on a 9-2 run to trim the lead to two points.
William Jewell showed their strength in shooting from beyond the arc, knocking down 10-21 from beyond the arc. However, the Roos were able to make adjustments to disrupt the Cardinals from pulling away.
“I thought we did a good job keeping composure against a great 3-point shooting team who is capable of making big runs,” noted coach Hoyt.
The teams traded swings back and forth in the second quarter with neither side holding a lead greater than three points. UMKC closed out the half on a layup from Kristen Moore (Chicago, Ill.) as time expired to trim the Cardinal lead to 33-32. Samantha Waldron (Omaha, Neb.) and Aries Washington (Kansas City, Mo.) led the Roos with eight points each in the first half. Washington contributed with five rebounds as well in the half.
UMKC was able to seize some momentum on the outset of halftime to stretch out a lead that they would not look back from. An 8-0 run near the end of the third quarter was capped off by a Kiana Law (Pittsburgh, Pa.) jumper that stretched the Roos lead out to 50-42. Law finished the game with a team-high 17 points and grabbed six boards in 21 minutes of play.
The Roos kept their foot on the gas in the final quarter of play to seal up a win in their only exhibition contest of the season. UMKC opened the quarter on a 12-3 run, sparked by three made baskets from Moore, who finished with a double-double in scoring 10 points and securing a team-high 11 rebounds.
The 16 point Roos lead would be too much to overcome for William Jewell, who didn’t come within six points the rest of the way. With time ticking away, the Cardinals tried attempted to close the gap by putting UMKC on the free-throw line. It would be to no avail as the Roos made seven of their eight free-throws in the final two minutes of regulation.
Four UMKC players scored in double-figures in the game, including Law (17), Waldron (16), Washington (16) and Moore (10). Washington and Waldron each handed out a team-leading five assists on the game. Fouls were a bit of an issue for the Roos, as three players finished the contest with four apiece.
“I’m proud of the way our team fought through adversity when we were in foul trouble,” commented Hoyt. “We had players step up and make big plays when we really needed them.”
The Roos will officially open up the regular season with a matchup at Western Illinois on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 and will have Live Stats available. UMKC will be on the road the entire month of November, including trips to take on Nebraska (Nov. 14), Tulsa (Nov. 18), Iowa State (Nov. 20), Illinois State (Nov. 26) and Kansas (Nov. 29).
