KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (7-13, 3-4) fell 3-1 on Saturday afternoon to Utah Valley (10-12, 5-2) in Western Athletic Conference play at the Swinney Recreation Center.
Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) and Alli Schomers (Omaha, Neb.) each notched double-doubles in the match with Harrington tallying 15 kills and 12 digs and Schomers going for 21 assists, 12 digs and three kills. Brooke Jacobs, meanwhile, finished with 11 kills for the Roos.
UMKC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match taking a hard-fought opening set. In the set, the Roos fell behind by as many as four on several occasions, including lastly at 19-15. Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa), though notched a kill and two points later Jacobs added a kill to cut the lead to one. An ace by Alex Ratzlaff (Hillsboro Kan.) then tied the match at 20-20, the first tie since 11-11. The Roos continued to hang close, as UVU was unable to build more than a one point advantage, before another Sadler kill and an ace from Mikayla Martinez (Frederick, Colo.) gave Kansas City the lead at 26-25. Twice more the Wolverines would knot the score, but a kill from Harrington and an ace from Sadler sealed the 29-27 first set win.
The lead, however, was short lived as Utah Valley quickly tied the match at one set apiece with a 25-14 second set victory. The Wolverines then took their first lead of the match with a 25-21 victory, breaking a 20-20 tie late with five of the set’s final six points.
In the fourth set, Utah Valley would close out the match, going ahead by seven midway through the set before ending the match with a 25-18 fourth set win.
For the Roos, Ratzlaff finished with six kills, eight digs and two aces and Sadler went for four kills and four blocks. In the back row, Rhegan Spiegel (Savannah, Mo.) finished with 14 digs and Kynnedy Myers (Rose Hill, Kan.) added 19 assists and four digs.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they head to Bakersfield, Calif., to take on CSU Bakersfield at 9 p.m. CT in a WAC matchup.
