DENVER, Colo. – UMKC men’s soccer forward Eric McWoods (St. Louis, Mo.) has been named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. This award is the second of the season for the senior captain.

“Eric had a great weekend for us,” commented head coach Rick Benben. “It was certainly one of the best individual performances in the history of our program, but Eric will be the first to let everyone know that it was a team effort.”

In UMKC’s 3-2 come-from-behind victory against UT Rio Grande Valley on Friday, McWoods led the charge for the Roos, netting all three goals to complete the hat trick. A tied game at the half turned into an offensive battle in the final 45 minutes of action, as a pair of McWoods’ goals happened within six minutes of each other – and in the final 10 minutes of the match – to help the Roos open conference play with a win. McWoods’ hat trick against the Vaqueros is the first for UMKC since John Bayron Sosa achieved the feat in 2010.

McWoods continued his scoring ways in UMKC’s 1-0 shutout victory against Incarnate Word on Sunday, helping the Roos to a 2-0 start in league play for the first time since the 2012 season. His 16 points and seven goals overall lead the WAC.

“I am honored to represent my school and my team with this award,” shared McWoods. “It’s exciting to achieve this honor for the second time this season and our team is continuing to move in a great direction.”

McWoods and the Roos will travel south for their first road match of the conference slate on Oct. 5 when they play Houston Baptist to open up a three-game stretch on the road.
