KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s soccer team came away with an impressive 2-0 victory over Illinois-Chicago in their first home contest of the regular season. The Roos put on a terrific show and looked like a team determined to secure their first victory of the season from the opening kick.

It did not take UMKC long to find the scoreboard, gaining early momentum that would carry through the entire night. Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) used a great shot fake to work the ball past a Flames defender up to the goal line. Two crisp passes later, Liz Mann (Kansas City, Mo.) found herself with just the keeper to beat and found the net from close range to notch her first goal of the season.

“Tonight was a very good night for us”, noted head coach Chris Cissell. “It was absolutely a total team effort and a lot of players were able to contribute in one way or another.”

It was not just the offense that the Roos put on display against Illinois-Chicago. UMKC was able to keep the ball out of their defensive half of the field throughout the night. When the Flames were able to get possession in their offensive zone, the team was able to quickly turn away scoring chances with fantastic team defense. Goalkeeping was also unblemished for the Roos with Anna Lillig (Kansas City, Mo.) and Erin Roth (Eureka, Mo.) combining for 3 saves and securing a team shutout.

“It was really a great all-around team victory”, commented Cissell. “Both of the goals we scored were very good goals, great shots that were set up by good passing and teamwork”.

The second half played out much like the first with UMKC controlling the game in all phases. Lexie Howard (Kearney, Mo.) tallied her first goal of the season to add on an insurance goal at the 68:43 mark. Howard was able to blast in a header that came off a perfectly executed corner kick from Lilly Cobb (Glen Carbon, Ill.). It was smooth sailing the rest of the way for the Roos as they coasted into the finish line and wrapped up a picture perfect home opener.

“Hopefully tonight can give us a confidence boost and propel us moving forward”, noted Cissell. “We were able to play all 21 girls who were healthy and getting that many players in a game at this level is pretty rare and should pay dividends later on.”

UMKC takes the field again at Durwood Stadium against South Dakota State on Sunday, Aug. 27 at 1 p.m. CT to wrap up their weekend home stretch.
