STILLWATER, Okla. – UMKC women's tennis (13-10) fell 4-0 to No. 9 Oklahoma State (23-5) in the opening round of the NCAA Stillwater Regional Saturday afternoon at the Greenwood Tennis Center. The Roos conclude a record-setting year for the program that included its first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament and conference championship.
"I am so proud of these ladies," head coach Kendell Hale said. "They went against one of the best teams in the nation and they fought until the end. These women began something great and we are looking forward to see what they can continue in future years."
In doubles action, Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia) and Melinda Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) were beaten 6-1 by Vladica Babic and Carla Tur Mari on the No. 1 court. Mariam Kurasbediani (Tbilsi, Georgia) and Thanushree Vale (Chennai, India) fell 6-0 in the No. 2 match to Aliona Bolsova and Katarina Stresnakova to clinch the doubles point for the Cowgirls.
In singles action, Ladutska fell 6-1, 6-1 to Lushkova in the No. 1 match. Johnson was beaten 6-0, 6-0 by Bolsova on the No. 2 court. Kurasbediani dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Stresnakova in the No. 3 contest to clinch the match for the high-powered Cowgirls.
Grechkina was down 6-1, 4-3 to Ruppert in No. 4 action when play concluded. Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) was leading the second set 3-2 against Tur Mari after dropping the first set 6-3. Vale was trailing 6-2, 5-1 at the end of the match.
