MESA, Ariz. – UMKC men's golf put together a valiant effort in the final round of the Western Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday at Longbow Golf Club as the Roos finished second, four shots back of Seattle U. The Roos shot 279 (-5) – the lowest round of the tournament – and twice tied the eventual champion Redhawks for the lead on the back nine. UMKC recorded 14 birdies on the day. Freshman McCain Schellhardt(Edmond, Okla.) tied for the lowest round of the day with a 66 (-5), including six birdies.

Schellhardt moved up 11 spots on the leaderboard in the third round and finished fourth individually. He notched three birdies on both the front and back nine.

“We are all certainly disappointed with the outcome,” head coach J.W. VanDenBorn said. “I am so proud of the spirit and the fight the guys showed today. We thought it would take a round in the 270s to have a chance to win today. The guys went out and did what they needed to do to put themselves in a position to win today. It just didn't break our way.

“We put ourselves in a hole through the first 27 holes of the tournament. We just couldn't get anything going. Yesterday's back nine really saved us and we carried that momentum into today. When we grabbed the lead as we were finishing the round, I thought we had a chance to pull off the comeback. Seattle recovered and played great golf over their last four holes.”

Jakob Garstecki (Germantown, Wis.) shot 68 (-3) with four birdies, including three over the last seven holes. He tied for 11th and moved up 13 spots in the final round.

Sam Humphreys (Edmond, Okla.) shot 72 (+1) with two birdies on the back nine. He tied for 13th individually. Hubert Tisserand (Lyon, France) carded a 77 (+6) and tied for 18th. Thibault Vieilledent (Cannes, France) finished with a 73 (+2).

Seattle U won the team title at 15-over par. Vinnie Murphy from Grand Canyon won the individual title at 3-under par. Kyle Cornett of Seattle finished two shots back.
