OREM, Utah – The UMKC softball team (15-36, 5-10 WAC) fell behind early, as Utah Valley (15-21, 7-8 WAC) took the series finale, 12-3.
Utah Valley loaded the bases early and walked in its first run with no outs in the bottom of the first inning. In the next at-bat, a Wolverine was hit by a pitch to walk in their second run. Back-to-back singles brought in three more Wolverines, but centerfielder Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.) connected with catcher Abbi Johnson (Midwest City, Okla.) to throw out the fourth Wolverine at home.
Alex Gale (Steeleville, Ill.) was hit by a pitch to start the second inning for UMKC. Freshman Lia Lombardini (Chesterton, Ind.) reached first base on a fielder's choice to get Gale out at second. With one out, Maegan Rollow (Broken Arrow, Okla.) stepped up to the plate and launched a two-run shot over the left field wall to put the Roos on the board.
The Wolverines extended their lead in the bottom half of the inning, tacking on six runs to take the commanding 11-2 lead over UMKC.
In the third, Morgan Byrn (Lawrence, Kan.) reached first base on a fielding error by the shortstop, but would be left stranded on the base. Right-handed pitcher Sara Miller (Marietta, Ga.) came to the circle for the Roos in the bottom of the inning, and with the help of the UMKC defense, Utah Valley went down in order for the first time of the afternoon.
The Roos fought back in the top of the fourth, as Lombardini reached first base on Utah Valley's second fielding error of the game to lead off the inning. Rollow bunted to the pitcher to put two on for the Roos, but both Lombardini and Rollow would be thrown out in the next at-bat due to the Wolverines' choice to put Johnson on first base.
A walk dealt to Faith Willis (Kearney, Mo.), followed by a single up the middle by Sydney Garcia (Kansas City, Mo.), loaded the bases for UMKC. Ashlin O'Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) singled straight to the pitcher, bringing Johnson home, but the Wolverines would hold on for the five-inning victory.
UMKC will conclude the 2017 regular season in nonconference action at Omaha on May 2.
The Roos have earned the No. 4 seed in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament on May 11-13 in Las Cruses, New Mexico. UMKC will face the No. 5 seeded CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners at 12 p.m. CT on the opening day of the double-elimination tournament.
