OREM, Utah – The UMKC softball team (15-35, 5-9 WAC) was unable to overcome Utah Valley (14-21, 6-8 WAC), dropping both games of the doubleheader to the Wolverines on Saturday.
A one-out single by the Wolverines in the bottom of the first, followed by a long ball over the left field wall in the next at-bat, gave Utah Valley the early lead over UMKC in the first game.
Both teams remained scoreless in the second, but a two-run third inning by the Roos knotted the game at two-all. Three consecutive singles by Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.), Sydney Garcia (Kansas City, Mo.) and Morgan Byrn (Lawrence, Kan.) loaded the bases for UMKC with just one out. Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.) hit a sac fly to right field to bring home the first Roo. Junior Ashlin O'Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) reached first base on a fielder's choice, but an error by the Wolverines, allowed Garcia to touch home plate before the out was recorded at second base.
Right-handed pitcher Andra O'Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and the UMKC defense put the Wolverines down in order in back-to-back innings, before Utah Valley used a three-run shot over the left-center field wall to take the 5-2 lead over the Roos.
In the top of the sixth, Maegan Rollow (Broken Arrow, Okla.), Abbi Johnson (Midwest City, Okla.) and Alex Gale (Steeleville, Ill.) each singled to the left side of the field. A throwing error by the Wolverines allowed Rollow and Johnson to make it home safely, cutting into Utah Valley's lead.
Two Roos singled, and another reached on a fielder's choice, but UMKC's seventh inning comeback was not enough, as the Wolverines took the first game of the twin bill, 6-4.
Leach was dealt a lead-off walk to start the second game of the doubleheader. A single by Byrn put two runners on base for UMKC. Goodwin singled through the right side in the following at-bat, as Leach used her speed to run home and give UMKC the 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines were held scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, but tacked on four runs in the second, to hold the 4-1 advantage going into the third. Back-to-back singles by O'Brien and Byrn, followed by a walk to Rollow, loaded the bases for UMKC to start the third for the visitors. The Wolverines were able to escape the inning, leaving all three Roos stranded.
Utah Valley continued its momentum over the next two innings, adding five runs on six hits to take the 9-1 lead through four. UMKC fought back in the top of the fifth, but the Wolverines claimed the series with the 9-1 victory in five innings.
The two teams will close the series on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT, before the Roos conclude the 2017 regular season at Omaha on May 2.
