LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The UMKC softball team (13-28, 4-3 WAC) was unable to overcome league-leading New Mexico State (18-17, 6-1 WAC) in the series opener on Friday, falling to the Aggies, 5-2.

In the first inning, back-to-back errors by the Aggies put two on base for the Roos with one out. Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.) stole her 10th base of the season to put runners on the corners. Sophomore Bri Sims (Rowlett, Texas) was dealt her 21st walk of the season to set up loaded bases for Morgan Byrn (Lawrence, Kan.). A single to right field by Byrn sent Leach home to give UMKC the 1-0 lead.

New Mexico State responded in the bottom of the inning, as an Aggie hit a two-run shot over the left field wall.

The Aggies made their third pitching change of the game in the top of the third after the Roos loaded the bases for the second-straight inning, but UMKC was unable to capitalize.

In the fourth inning, New Mexico State hit a one-out home run to center field to extend its lead.

Ashlin O’Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) was handed UMKC’s ninth free base of the game, and 115th of the season, to start the sixth, but the Aggies’ pitcher put the next three batters down in order. New Mexico State added two more runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 5-1 lead.

Byrn hit a lead-off long ball over the center field wall to start the seventh inning for UMKC. In the next at-bat, Lia Lombardini (Chesterton, Ind.) singled through the left side to put two on with no outs. A single up the middle by Maegan Rollow (Broken Arrow, Okla.) filled the bases for the Roos, but a fielder’s choice gave New Mexico State the 5-2 victory.

UMKC will conclude the three-game set with a doubleheader on Saturday. The first game of the twin bill is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. CT.
