KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Despite competing with only five singles players and two doubles tandems, UMKC women’s tennis (10-8) beat Creighton 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon at the Plaza Tennis Center. The Roos won both doubles matches and three singles contests.
In No. 1 singles action, Aliona Ladutska (Minsk, Belarus) outlasted Ashley Ishimura 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. Mariam Kurasbediani (Tbilsi, Georgia) also won in three sets, beating Michaela Henne 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 on the No. 2 court. Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia) continued her strong freshman season with her ninth straight singles victory, beating Katherine Nelson 6-0, 6-1 in No. 3 play. Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) won 6-4, 6-3 over Darby Rosette in the No. 4 match. Marina Albert (Thebes, Egypt) fell 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 to Hylan Miller in No. 5 play. Creighton’s Claire Embree was credited with the No. 6 win by default.
On the doubles courts, Ladutska and Grechkina beat Ishimura and Rosette 7-5 in the No. 1 contest. Albert and Kurasbediani were victorious over Henne and Nelson, 7-6. Embree and Miller took the No. 3 match by default.
UMKC returns to the court Thursday with a 3 p.m. CT match at Division II powerhouse Northwest Missouri State.
