UMKC Drops Close Match to Streaking NM State Squad, 4-3

SEATTLE, Wash. – UMKC men’s tennis (8-8, 2-2) fought hard but was unable to snap New Mexico State’s (13-5, 4-0) 6-match winning streak on Saturday morning in a 4-3 loss at the Seattle University Tennis Courts. The Roos claimed the doubles point but were only able to register victories in two singles victories.  

Uldis Gaismins (Riga, Latvia) defeated Luis Flores 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 on the No. 2 singles court and Mike Psarros (Athens, Greece) beat Enrique Asmar 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 5 match.

Airam Castellano (Gran Canaria, Spain) fell 6-3, 6-2 to Christofer Goncalves in No. 1 play. Amaury Navette (Paris, France) was beaten 6-2, 6-0 by Stijn de Haan in the No. 3 match. Tom Kruse (Flensburg, Germany) dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Sergi Espias in the No. 4 contest. Daniel Izadifar (Tonsberg, Norway) competed hard but was bested 7-5, 7-6 by Mauri Benitez on the No. 6 court.

In doubles play, Castellano and Psarros beat Goncalves and Flories 6-4 in the No. 1 match. Kruse and Vinh Pham (Lenexa, Kan.) defeated Espias and Asmar 6-3 in the No. 3 contest. Gaismins and Navette fell 6-4 on the No. 2 court.

Castellano and Psarros improved to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in WAC play on the No. 1 doubles court. Kruse and Pham have won two straight doubles matches. Psarros also registered his second straight singles victory.

UMKC closes the weekend with a 10 a.m. CT Sunday match vs. Chicago State.
