KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (10-26, 3-1 WAC) was unable to overcome late-inning runs by Grand Canyon (27-13, 2-2 WAC) at Missouri 3&2 Complex on Friday, falling to the Lopes, 9-0, in the first game of the three-game series.
Grand Canyon tacked on a run in the first inning and extended its lead with another run in the second.
Freshman Sydney Garcia (Kansas City, Mo.) recorded the first hit of the game for UMKC – a bunt in front of the plate – in the third inning. She followed that with her eighth stolen base of the season, but would be left on base.
Shortstop Morgan Byrn (Lawrence, Kan.) was hit by a pitch to begin the fourth inning. Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.) stepped up to the plate and singled to the shortstop. With two on, and nobody out, Ashlin O’Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) was dealt her 11th walk of the season to load the bases for the Roos. Grand Canyon’s defense converted a double-play to quickly crush UMKC’s momentum.
The Lopes would score seven runs on five hits in the following two innings to take the first game of the three-game set in six innings.
The two teams will conclude the series on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. CT.
