WESTWOOD, Kan. – UMKC women’s tennis (9-8, 4-1) dropped a close 4-3 contest to Grand Canyon (11-5, 5-0) on Sunday afternoon at Woodside Health & Tennis Club. The Roos and Lopes each won three singles matches but the Lopes claimed the doubles point to earn the victory.

In No. 1 singles action, Aliona Ladutska (Minsk, Belarus) was beaten 6-7, 6-2, 6-7 by Tatum Prudhomme. Melinda Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Alexandra Petrzalkova on the No. 2 court. Mariam Kurasbediani (Tbilsi, Georgia) won 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 over Susan Baklini in No. 3 action. Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia) beat Celina Buhr 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 4 match. Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) fell 6-3, 7-6 to Lana Rinaldi in No. 5 action. Thanushree Vale (Chennai, India) beat Emilia Occhipinti 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 6 contest.

Johnson and Grechkina beat Prudhomme and Baklini 7-6 in the No. 1 doubles match. Kurasbediani and Vale were beaten 6-3 by Rinaldi and Occhipinti on the No. 2 court. Marina Albert (Thebes, Egypt) and Ladutska fell 6-1 to Petrzalkova in the No. 3 matchup.

UMKC returns to the court Wednesday at Northwest Missouri State.
