BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The UMKC softball team (8-25) opened Western Athletic Conference competition with a 5-3 victory at CSU Bakersfield (5-21) on Friday.
Each side went down in order to start the game, but Bri Sims (Rowlett, Texas) was dealt her 11th walk of the season to lead off the second inning. In the next at-bat, sophomore Morgan Byrn (Lawrence, Kan.) bombed her team-leading fifth home run of the season over the left field wall to put UMKC ahead, 2-0.
The Roos and the Roadrunners would go scoreless in the third and fourth innings, despite a hit by junior Ashlin O’Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.). In the fifth inning, Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.) was given UMKC’s third free base of the game and scored on a two-out double to right field by freshman Sydney Garcia (Kansas City, Mo.). Garcia advanced to third base on a wild pitch, but would be left stranded to end the inning.
Sims was handed a lead-off walk to start the sixth, bringing Alex Gale (Steeleville, Ill.) into the game to pinch run. Gale advanced to second on a wild pitch and ran home on an error by the Roadrunners. UMKC loaded the bases with just one out and brought home its fifth Roo of the game to take the 5-0 lead.
CSU Bakersfield responded in the bottom of the sixth inning, and threatened again in the seventh, but UMKC held on for the 5-3 win to open the series.
UMKC will conclude the conference series at CSU Bakersfield with a twin bill on Saturday. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. CT with the second to follow.
