MERRIAM, Kan. – UMKC women’s tennis (8-7, 3-0) remained perfect in Western Athletic Conference play with a 6-1 victory over the defending conference champions UTRGV on Friday at the Kansas City Racquet Club. The Roos won five singles matches and also claimed the doubles point. UMKC has now won five of its last six matches dating back to Feb. 26.
In No. 1 singles action, Aliona Ladutska (Minsk, Belarus) beat Anastasia Belyaeva 6-3, 2-6, 6-0. Mariam Kurasbediani (Tbilsi, Georgia) outlasted Dominique Ibarra 6-7, 6-1, 10-8 on the No. 3 court. Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia) defeated Marine Darzyan 6-1, 6-3 in No. 4 play. Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) took down Chloe Leclere in straight sets in No. 5 action, 6-1, 6-1. Thanushree Vale (Chennai, India) was credited with a No. 6 victory by default. Melinda Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) was forced to retire during the third set of the No. 2 match, which gave the win to Dominique Esparza.
On the doubles courts, Grechkina and Johnson beat Darzyan and Ibarra 6-3 in the No. 1 match. The Roos claimed the doubles point by default in the No. 3 match. Kurasbediani and Vale were beaten 6-4 by Belyaeva and Esparza in No. 2 play.
