MORAGA, Calif. – The UMKC softball team (7-25) was unable to overcome Saint Mary’s (14-18), dropping a pair of games to the Gaels at Cottrell Field on Tuesday.
UMKC gave up just one hit in the second inning of the first game before Saint Mary’s took advantage of a four-hit third inning to put the Gaels out in front, 2-0.
In the fourth inning, SMC’s starting pitcher walked Morgan Byrn (Lawrence, Kan.) and Bri Sims (Rowlett, Texas) consecutively for UMKC’s third and fourth free bases of the afternoon, but both runners were left stranded.
Back-to-back singles to left field, followed by a double down the right-field line, pushed the Gaels ahead by four runs in the fifth.
A double down the left-field line by Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.) in the sixth inning gave UMKC its first hit of the game, but the Roos would be held scoreless the remainder of the game, falling to the Gaels, 4-0.
In the second game of the twin bill, Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.) led off with a single through the left side and advanced to second base on a sac bunt by Sydney Garcia (Kansas City, Mo.) in the following at-bat. Leach reached third base on a wild pitch before stealing home to put the Roos out in front. The Gaels responded in the bottom half of the inning, adding one to the board on two hits.
Both teams would go without a hit in the following two innings before Abby Warkentine (Auburn, Kan.) tapped a bunt single to the pitcher in the fourth. In the bottom of the inning, the Gaels loaded the bases and were able to send two runners home to take the lead over UMKC.
The Roos would leave five runners on base in the remaining three-inning span, giving SMC the 3-1 victory.
UMKC will conclude its trip to the west coast, and open conference competition, at CSU Bakersfield this weekend. The Roos and the Roadrunners will open the series at 4 p.m. CT on Friday before playing two games on Saturday.
